it’s pronounced “bar-the-lona”

20th april

hola, from barcelona! although, its been a good month and a bit of travelling and this blog post, despite being in my draft for 2 months, is finally being published. thanks for your patience bestie, you know who you are!

tell me why the weather app baited us into cancelling our horse riding in the mountains due to rain and proceeded to shower us with nothing but sunshine for the past 3 days?!grr – but if you’re in town, hit up airbnb experiences for their: montserrat walking and horse riding day trip.

i’m not going to complain, because it meant we got a whole day free to do whatever we liked and there is nothing more i enjoy than having extra time in my intinerary.

we visited the famous mercat de la boqueria – a large indoor/ outdoor food market and hall in the centre of the city. what didn’t we try is the big question. my favorite and best value for money would have to be the deep fried seafood & empanadas.

we spent some time around barceloneta – beautiful but crowded neighborhood directly by the beach. there’s also several cafes and speakeasy bars you’ll want to check out if you’re ever visiting. it’s one of the more popular and known tourist spots so we’re going to try and spend some time along the neighboring beaches in the coming days.

i think my favorite part of the culture here is that there is music on every corner of the street, people singing, locals dancing, instrumental concerts in main squares and small artists converting what would normally be an ordinary narrow street into private concerts. no matter how bad your day has been, you will literally find a reason to sing on your way home.

i think i tried the best sandwich / burger i’ve ever had in my whole damn little life. we had heard only good things about the sandwich club so it was only right to have a meal there and my oh my, was it so worth it! incredible value for money and nothing disappointed.

also, sweet potato fries with garlic aioli 🤤 i ordered the chicken shawarma burger, frank got the beef tartare sandwich i think and we tried their locally sourced kombucha. we did stop by again for dinner on one of the nights, i stuck to my proven burger but think frank got the pastrami sandwich. oh and they also do breakfast and sweet sandos – which we are yet to try.

yesterday was a gaudi day. much to our disappointment and lack of preparation, we weren’t able to go inside the sagrada familia – so if you’re ever headed to barcelona, pre book all your excursions and tours. we experienced the same with parc guell, although we weren’t too fussed about that. instead, we made a pact to be back as soon as the construction of the basilica was completed.

we decided to book a tour of the first home done by gaudi – casa vicens, so very underrated and personally worth the tour compared to the other 2 more reknown home, battlo & mila.

here’s 3 fun facts for you about casa vicens:

  • casa vicens (1883–85) was gaudi’s first major architectural project. He was just 31 years old when he took on the project, 5 years after graduating from architecture school.
  • the floral tiles were inspired by marigolds growing on the site.
  • it became a unesco world heritage site in 2005.

we’ve been spending the last few nights before bed, minutes deep into documentaries about the city, the architecture, food and more. tonight’s watch was why barcelona is built in squares?

that’s all for now, i’ll see you on the next one.
